Miguel Díaz-Pache: “The world is moving towards sustainability and energy efficiency, but it has to be done”
We speak with Miguel Diaz-Pache, Director of Innovation and Development at OTEA.
Miguel is one of the great architects of the launch of OTEA 10, not only because he is in charge of coordinating the day-to-day of the development team, but he is also one of those responsible for setting the roadmap.
We talked to him about his career at EcoMT, OTEA and what can we expect from this tool in the future.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AT ECOMT?
Well, a long time. Almost 10 years already.
AT THAT TIME YOU WERE ALREADY WORKING IN IOT BUT IT WAS STILL NOT AS POPULAR AS IT IS NOW, HOW DO YOU REMEMBER IT?
I remember that our obsession was to connect everything we could to collect as much useful information as possible to allow us to do things.
At that time we fought a lot with brands, models, protocols and everything unimaginable to be able to connect.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THAT EXPERIENCE?
That we can. OTEA is so universal and abstract that you can control everything you imagine.
NOW THAT A NEW VERSION OF OTEA HAS BEEN RELEASED YOU ARE IN A SWEET PROFESSIONAL TIME, COULD YOU EXPLAIN WHAT OTEA IS AND WHAT IS IT FOR?
OTEA is much more than an energy management platform or system. I usually define it as an expert tele management system. It is a tool used to monitor, control and analyse data in detail.
OTEA is so universal and abstract that you can control everything you imagine. For example, in a supermarket you can get to control every door, every light bulb or the smallest detail that comes to mind.
SO, WHO IS OTEA FOR?
It’s a complicated question.
OTEA is for many people. Our clients use it to automate processes, optimize energy consumption, program alarms or even to predict failures.
With regards the energy branch, OTEA is important for many companies due to the potential savings it can provide. It can analyse data from meters and other sensors with the aim of reducing energy consumption. But on the other hand, it is also important and useful for a maintenance company since with OTEA they can remotely manage installations wherever they are.
But this does not end there. Keep in mind that we currently have in OTEA: industrial factories, clothing stores, hotels, supermarkets, municipal buildings, soccer fields, ships…
OTEA is for many people. Our clients use it to automate processes, optimize energy consumption, program alarms or even to predict failures.
ARE THERE BOATS CONNECTED TO OTEA?
Yes. We have a connected fleet of boats that are dedicated to fishing in the North Sea. In collaboration with these clients, we designed a solution that connects the trawl winches to OTEA to collect information, through a satellite connection, which is later analysed in order to improve the efficiency of fishing operations, optimize resources and reduce energy and operating costs.
We also develop algorithms that relate the information collected with the state of the seas in real time.
BTW, DO WE ALSO HAVE SOME OFFICE PLUG CONNECTED?
I think we have the coffee maker connected. And I even think it works with Nerea (OTEA’s virtual assistant)
THE PANDEMIC HAS SHOWN THE NEED TO COMPLY WITH THE 2030 AGENDA, WHAT DO YOU THINK OTEA’S ROLE IS IN THIS CONTEXT?
The world is on a path towards sustainability and energy efficiency, but it has to be done. And OTEA has been working on this for more than 10 years.
AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM OTEA IN THE FUTURE?
OTEA aims to address many fields. We always have to try to be one step ahead, because in this technological world, if you stop, you die.
We observe a lot what is done in the market and, above all, we rely on the experience and the good relationship we have with our clients. They always give us opinions or ideas of what they would like to do. This is quite crazy but in turn, it poses great challenges.
Thank you very much for sharing this time with us, Miguel.
